There's always fun stuff happening in Hampton Roads. Here are our best bets for what not to miss:
Open mic nights. Local songwriters Vaughn Deel and Sueanne Doyer will host open mic events at Cozzy's Comedy Club in Newport News (8 p.m. Monday) and at Victorian Station in Hampton (7 p.m. Thursday). These events will be used as competitions to select two local songwriters who will get to play sets as part of the Aiken & Friends music festival lineup in Smithfield next month. There is no cover charge for either of the open mic events. Info: 757-599-2800 for Cozzy's, 757-723-5663 for Victorian Station. For info on the festival, go to aikenandfriendsfest.com.
Africana music festival and FunkFest. A great lineup of funk and blues bands will perform all weekend at the Africana festival at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront (23rd to 25th streets). National acts include Con Funk Shun and the Zapp Band on Friday night, and Larry Graham (pictured) with Graham Central Station on Saturday. Local acts include The Fuzz Band on Friday, Anthony Rosano and the Conqueroos on Saturday, and the Myra Smith Experience on Sunday. General admission is free, but packages are available starting at $20. Tickets, free or paid, can be downloaded at africanavirginiabeach.com. Info: 757-491-7866.
Food Truck Rodeo. The Eat the Streets 757 Food Truck Rodeo pulls into Carousel Park in downtown Hampton from noon-4 p.m. Sunday. This is the first of four such events at that location, to be held every other Sunday through Oct. 11. All sorts of good food from local vendors. This weekend’s menu is scheduled to include Bro’s Fish Tacos, Captn Crabby, Poor Boys Burgers, New York Souvlaki, Seoul 757, Shore Thing Foods, Sofrito and Twisted Sisters Cupcakes. Info: ets757.com.
