7th Annual Freaky Kon-Tiki river raft race tomorrow in Hampton
HAMPTON, Va. (WVEC) -- Downtown Hampton is gearing up for the Seventh Annual Freaky Kon-Tiki river raft race!
Happening July 23, the event, sponsored by Hampton Bay Days, allows a team of five people to build a raft on-site and race other contestants around a course in the Hampton River.
Raft construction begins at 9 a.m. in Mill Point Park. All rafts must be homemade and will be inspected prior to launching. In addition, all rafts must be human-propelled and self-propelled. No power is available and no generators can be used in the making of the rafts. There is a $100 maximum for the amount allowed on building materials and teams must bring receipts.
The first heat of the day is scheduled for 11 a.m. Teams can be as large as five people, however all rafts must have two people during the heat race. The rest of the team can help move the raft from the water to the finish line.
After the start, the rafts will proceed around the course with each heat being timed. The best times of all heats will go into the final.
