College students get a shot at designing mural

Ryan Murphy Contact Reporter

In Downtown Hampton, in what has now been designated as the city's arts district, there's a building sitting on Armistead Avenue with plenty of bright white wall space just begging to be painted on.

Yellow Cab of Hampton, the owners of the building, are looking to give local art students a shot at designing a mural to decorate the one-story office building at 12 S. Armistead Ave.

Art or graphic design students enrolled full-time in a Hampton Roads college or university can enter. The only rules for submission, according to the website, are that designs adhere to a template downloadable on the company’s website and for artists to include the phrase “Yellow Cab” or a taxicab in the artwork.

The company will start taking submissions on Jan 15. Entries have to be in by midnight on Feb 29.

The company will then post 10 entries on their website for public vote between March 14 and March 20. Yellow Cab will then pick the winner from the top three vote-getters and the winner will be announced at an event on March 26.

First place takes $2,500 plus all the fame and glory that goes with winning. Second will earn $500 and third place gets $250.

Visit yellowcabofhampton.com/yellowcabmural for details or to download the template. Then, check back in March to vote on the one you’d want to look at as you cruise down Armistead.
