Dockhand Needed at Hampton Public Piers
Dockhands: Reports to Dockmaster and Executive Director.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for assisting the Dockmaster with the operations of the Downtown Hampton Development Partnership.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION:
Work involves frequent contact with the public and requires the incumbent to resolve problems and address a variety of concerns diplomatically and to ensure that established policies and procedures are followed.
WORK BEHAVIORS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
In the absence of the Dockmaster, is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of the piers and marina equipment; keeping the facilities and adjacent grounds clean; monitors and ensures proper use of the piers and proper and safe mooring of transient vessels.
Greets the public and answers the telephone; explains rental and related policies of the Public Piers; answers questions concerning the rules, regulations and standard operating procedures of the Public Piers; receives complaints and resolves as appropriate, refers more difficult problems to the Dockmaster.
Operates cash box and collects revenues from sales of slip rentals, ice, pump-out and miscellaneous items for sale; administers and enforces lease agreements; operates marine radios; assists boaters in completing slip rental agreements.
Assists the Dockmaster in preparing part-time work schedules; assists the Dockmaster with turning in time sheets; oversees the work of contractors; ensures that the work is being done according to specifications/directions from the Dockmaster.
Checks equipment and makes repairs to equipment and piers and reports major problems to the Dockmaster.
Performs other related work as required; not limited to but to include helping with clerical duties in the office of the Downtown Hampton Development Partnership.
ENTRY KNOWLEDGE'S, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
General knowledge of marine operations.
General knowledge of boating operations and activities.
General knowledge of personal computers, including the ability to use word processing software.
Some knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
Effective oral and written communications skills.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships and to deal effectively and courteously with the public.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience to a high school diploma and 4 years of closely related experience, with at least one year of experience in marina related work.
Requires a valid Virginia driver's license.
Requires the physical ability to perform the work, which involves some lifting of up to 25-30 lbs, bending, stooping, reaching and pulling on lines to moor the vessels
