Thousands of people flock to Hampton's annual Blackbeard Festival, many decked out in pirate garb and yaaar-ing their way through another flagon of ale.
And the city’s storied pirate history seems to have attracted the interest of another traveler — Josh Gates, an archeologist and paranormal researcher turned television host. Gates’ show, “Expedition Unknown,” delves into historical legends like the disappearance of Amelia Earhart or the lost Incan city of gold.
In an upcoming episode, Gates tackles Blackbeard’s fabled hidden gold in the waters off of the Cayman Islands and the coasts of North Carolina, according to the Travel Channel Website.
Ryan Downey of the Hampton Convention and Visitors Bureau, has been cagey about Hampton’s connection to the program, but the connection to Blackbeard is distinct — after he was finally caught in 1718, the privateer’s severed head was put on display in a harbor in Hampton to serve as a warning to other ne’er-do-wells floating about in Hampton Roads.
